You've hit upon something I have noted, too. While the 4X4s do a good job of churning up the mud at these events, if it's just an open field of mud (as it is many times), it's not safe to get in and play when they are tearing around at higher speeds. I now only attend ATV off-road events (unless there is a dash for cash or a time after the 4x4s run for getting into the pits), as they are slower and safer to wallow around. I have found with all that mud, it's hard to control myself and I will get into it, but then I see trucks barrelling my way.
If an ATV gets stuck, hopping in to help push or save a swamping vehicle is much more acceptable (and safer), so I stick to ATV events for my off-road event mudding.
