A man in northern Arizona demonstrates the properties of quicksand in the bed of the Little Colorado River.

For some reason 20th Century Hollywood insisted on giving a grossly inaccurate depiction of quicksand. For the serious hiker, quicksand is a minor inconvenience, not a lethal threat, and as this fellow demonstrates, playing in it can be quite fun.

The simple physics of it is that you can't sink very deep in quicksand because it's much more dense than your body. If it's too deep and thick to walk out of it, you can crawl out of it.
