They varied in quality, but several of them completely covered the trail. Mountain bicyclists and hikers would deviate into the mesquite thicket to avoid them, but I would just splash right through. Then there were other areas that had been covered but there was no surface standing water but nice mud that yielded under my boots. I forgot to mention that near the trailhead I saw the tracks of an adult barefoot human being, so someone was enjoying the mud that way. There were also a lot of dog or coyote tracks and tracks of horses' hooves. I think the reason the mud at Reach 11 is so good is that the trail is composed of compacted clay. There wasn't a whole lot of mud in the surrounding desert, as the soil is more sandy, but there was an uncharacteristic carpet of green grass.
